To progress your career, you may have to move into a role that places you in a supervisory position for the first time. Making the move into supervision can be challenging, particularly if you will be managing employees who were previously your peers. If you find yourself in this position, there are steps that you can take to ensure that your move into supervisory managements goes smoothly.

Set Your Expectations:

When you are appointed to the role of supervisor, you should meet with your team and explain your expectations of them. By having this discussion, you can make it clear from the outset where the boundaries lie. You can also ask the team to share their expectations of you. This dialogue can help to avoid any misunderstandings at a later stage.

Be Consistent:

Once you have established your expectations of the team, you must be consistent in how you apply the rules. You cannot make exceptions based on your friendship or previous relationship with your direct reports. By doing so, you could leave yourself open to allegations of favoritism. For example, if you tell your team you expect them to be on time every day and one of your team is late on a regular basis, you must take steps to address the issue. You cannot bend the rules simply because you like the individual.

You should take these people aside and explain how the parameters of your friendship have changed due to your new position. If they cannot accept this change, you may need to resign yourself to losing the friendship.

When you are new to a role, it can be helpful to ask for advice from more experienced colleagues. When you face problems, seek advice from other supervisors who can share with you how they approached the role when they were first appointed.
